Homemade Ice-Cream!

As promised, I will post the recipe for homemade ice-cream that 4/5 Science and 7/8 ELA made today:

In a small Ziploc bag, combine 1 cup milk, 2 tablespoons sugar and 1 teaspoon of vanilla. Squeeze out the air when you close it and put this bag into another small Ziploc bag and seal it.  (Just in case the first bag tears or opens).

Fill a large Ziploc bag with snow (or ice) and add 6 tablespoons of salt to it. Put the small bag into the large bag with snow and seal the large bag. Now....SHAKE SHAKE SHAKE for 15 minutes!
Voila! Soft serve, homemade, better than store-bought ice-cream!

Thanks for a super fun day!

7/8 ELA Weekend Homework

Good evening!
The grade 7/8s have some homework for this weekend if it wasn't finished. First, they have some Christmas similes and metaphors to write. Second, they started a descriptive writing, describing a fantasy room. Their writing must be at least 3/4 of a page, have one metaphor or simile included and 7-10 sensory words (which they are to underline). They were given a sheet with example sensory words to help them out. The room can be as imaginative and creative as they want!
Keep warm this weekend! :)

4/5/ Science - Need Pop Bottles

The grade 4/5 class has started their unit on Maintaining A Healthy Body. We have already studied the digestive system, creating a scale model of it to find out just how long our "small intestines" really are and today we will be doing activities to see the job each organ performs.

On Tuesday, we are going to start learning about the respiratory system. In order to build a model of our lungs and show how our diaphragm works, I'm asking students to each bring in a small plastic pop bottle. Thanks!

So Excited!

Good Evening Everyone! I am proud to announce that two of our students will be aired on both CFRY and MIX96 starting as early as 6 am on Saturday! They had a phone interview with the newsroom at CFRY today promoting donations to our local Christmas Cheer Hampers. This is a tentative time for right now but I had to share as I am so proud of what our students are doing in our community to get the word out! Send in dry, non-perishable food items that can to be donated! The kids have also asked that if you have an unwrapped new toy that you could donate that would be great as well as they want to donate these to be given out as well.

You will all find out soon and I will be posting some of their stuff in regards to this project on this blog so please stay tuned in!

On a completely different note I am still super proud of all of our volleyball players! They all worked very hard and tried their best! It was amazing to watch you all develop skills and strategies as well as learning to work together as a team! Thank you to all the parents who came out to support these great kids! They really are a great group of kids to work with.

I just wanted to put up a quick update on Volleyball as we have had a change to our schedule! This week there are no more after school practices or games, however next week we have a game in Carberry on Monday, we will leave here at 3 and return between 5:30 and 6. On Tuesday we are going to a mini-tournament with both boys and girls in Macgregor, we will leave here at 3:00 and return at approximately 7 on the bus or when the games are finished, students will be able to text or call parents to let them know of changes. The boys then have a game in Langruth on Wednesday. Then Monday and Tuesday we have Divisionals here at AES. Let me know if you are able to volunteer at our canteen for either Monday or Tuesday. We will be starting around 2. Any help is greatly appreciated!! Also I just wanted to send out a shout out to all you parents and all the great support you have given our teams this year! It is so nice to see so many parents coming out to watch!

4/5 Science Weather Instruments

On Monday, the grade 4/5 class made weather instruments. It was lots of fun and they did a fantastic job! The thermometers worked a little too good and overflowed a bit when they went from really cold to really warm!

Today we will be reviewing for our science quiz on Friday. A study guide is coming home, along with their science duotangs. Please help your child study for the quiz!

Friday 1 November 2013

7/8 Autobiographies

Just a reminder that you should have the first section (Early Life) of your autobiography completed: brainstorming, rough draft and typed final copy. The final copy was to be saved in the assignments folder on the school network.
The next section (These Days) was started today and the brainstorming should be completed and rough draft at least half done.

Don't forget to change your clocks back an hour this weekend!

Have a great weekend! Enjoy the beautiful weather while it lasts! :)

We Day

Wow! We Day was an amazing experience, for the students and teachers both! 16 000 people filled the MTS Centre and it lit up with applause and cheering, over and over and over again! The students really seemed to have been impacted and amazed at the experiences that were shared with us. When writing a journal entry about We Day, many students wrote about the young lady who talked about the harsh bullying she went through, the man who climbed a mountain with no legs and said you really can do anything, and the reporter who was held hostage in another country and still later returned to help people there. It was an incredible day and one that won't be forgotten any time soon.

4/5 Science Next Week

Thought I would give you a look at the plan for science next week, as we are coming to the end of our unit. On Monday, we will be building our weather instruments! Please make sure that the supplies needed are sent to school, along with the direction sheet they brought home. On Wednesday, we are going to review the important concepts and vocabulary with a Jeopardy game and they will hopefully have some time to study after. I will give them a review sheet that tells exactly what they need to know for their quiz, which will then be on Friday. The quiz will not have any surprises and if they missed something, the review sheet will have it on there.

Thursday 24 October 2013

4/5 Science Weather Instruments

The grade 4/5s should be bringing home a note today, along with a booklet of various weather instruments. They have each chosen one instrument to make at school (on November 4th), but need help getting a few supplies from home. Please help your child find the supplies they need to bring (they are starred (*)on the booklet) and send the direction booklet back to school with the supplies. If you wish to send more of the other supplies that are not starred, please do so, however, it is not required as I will gather those for them as well.
Thank-you!

WE DAY

On October 30, 2013, the grade 7s and 8s will be going to the Winnipeg MTS Centre for We Day. We will be leaving AES at 7:00 a.m. and arriving back at AES at 4:30 p.m.  Here are a couple of important things to remember about We Day:

Autobiographies

We have been busy writing about a topic we all know really well...ourselves! Remember to ask someone what it was like the day you were born (a beautiful, summer day or maybe the drive to the hospital was during the worst blizzard of the decade) and also how you got the name you did.

TUSC

The grade 7/8s have been working on becoming comfortable speaking in front of the class through the use of the TUSC program. Each week, students get a different role, most requiring a little bit of research. The next presentation day is Wednesday, October 23rd. Anyone not finished their role should do it for homework so they are ready to present. If internet is not available at home, it is the students responsibility to ask to stay in during part of their break to finish up.

Friday 18 October 2013

Science Quiz!

Just a quick correction Grade 6/7 your science quiz is on Wednesday! Please remember to study!!! I will hopefully have all your assignments back to you by Monday! Enjoy a great weekend! I hope you get out to see some of the girls soccer in Austin and I will get to see some of you tomorrow for the outdoor ed trip!

6/7 Science

Don't forget, Grade 6/7s have a science quiz on Monday, October 21st.

4/5 Science

The Grade 4/5 class has been busily learning about weather in science. They have all been working on a project on some type of severe weather and began creating powerpoints out of all their information. They are powerpoint experts and found some really interesting information! Like did you know that there is a hurricane on Jupiter that has been going for more than 400 years!?

Girl Power

Happy Friday, Everyone!
Since the school yard was full of girls for soccer provincials, we had a special "girls only meeting" this morning. After this, all the girls ran loudly, cheering through the halls, outside to cheer on the MacGregor Mustangs during their game. Of course, we ended up including the boys and they joined us in cheering outside!
It was a great way to start Friday morning!

Lighter than air...

Did you know some air is lighter than other air? Grade 6/7 science students should be able to explain that to you and why! Also ask them if air is a fluid and if they say yes or no tell them to explain why!! We have had such a great couple of days experimenting with air as a fluid!

It's a long weekend for all you students out there! I hope you have a great weekend and enjoy the weather! Those of you who are coming on the bike trip please remember to be at the school by 9:30 Saturday morning with a bag lunch and your bike! We will be returning by approximately 2:30.

Getting Into it!

I just wanted to let the parents and students alike know that I had a great science class with the Grade 6/7's yesterday. We took some notes introducing the class to air as a fluid and then the students were challenged with finding a way to prove whether or not fluids expand when they were heated. The class was introduced to the scientific method and have all found an experiment to do to prove their hypothesis. It was so exciting to see all those students completely engaged in what they were doing!
I hope today's double French with the grade 6/7's go's just as smoothly. We are hoping to start some basic play writing with the students and are aiming to have students perform small skits that they have written in French. Have a great day!

Help!!

Good Evening Parents!
I am sending out a call for help! If you have any old newspapers, magazines, christmas wishbooks etc that you don't need anymore, we would love to have these at the school for some of the upcoming art projects that Ms. Mauthe and I may do! We started art with the grade 6-8's today and had a blast introducing them to making art like the famous author and artist Eric Carle! Thanks for your help with this!

First Day Jitters

Hey Everyone!
I hope you have had a great summer and you are all looking forward to coming back to join us at the school this year. I know for a fact that your teachers have been working hard preparing for all of you to come back to make this the best year ever.

We have decided to start this middle years blog at AES so that parents and students alike have a good ideas as to what is going on as many of our students have more than one teacher throughout the school day. We are hoping that this blogspot is a place you can come and look for assignment dates, special activity announcements and so on in the school. You may also find that we use this blog just to give you an update as to what is going on with the classes at school so that parents know what is being covered or some of the ideas being taught, although really this isn't necessary because I know ALL of our students go home to tell you all about what happened and what they learnt at school that day.

Just to get it started here are somethings that you should know:

  • September 9th is picture day, it is coming very quick!
  • You will be getting a package of information home with lots of information please return the forms that need to be returned in a timely fashion!
  • We will be having our first assembly Wednesday to do a quick meet and greet with all the staff! There are a few new staff in our school this year!
